I lit a candle for Jesus
and he whispered your name
I said I ain't looking to be saved
he smiled and said I'd fired the flame
and he showed me your right eye
Green like the sea that St Patrick drove all the serpents into
As green as all the envy in the world
As green as the grass on the other side
I said I ain't looking for that
Jesus said your eyes see what's to be seen
whether you wish to or not
And he showed me your heart
a heart as red as mine
Red blood red
as red as the devils eyes
as red as the holly berry
and they say that's a holy bush
It's not what I came for
No none of this is what I reached here for
Look I said there's nothing
on the tip of my tongue
nothing waiting
nothing to be hung
no rope to be pulled
no gallows to be swung
no nail to be hammered home
no cross to be raised
no hill to be topped
ain't nothing to stop
nothing to drop
nothing to drive me to my knees
Jesus just smiled
and said ain't me praying
and he blew me a kiss of change
And I know that it ain't all true what my mind says
That it ain't always come to pass
what my heart desires
So I slip a ring into the hearth
and I lay my head in a purple night sky
constellations of stars leap out of my left eye
and maybe I did light the flame
maybe I do stand here now
maybe I am responsible for my actions
my actions form a man out of Eden
not blind but with eyes that see
things I may try to hide
But are there all the same
and remain without shame for we are
all kissed with change.
